ABSTRACT

It is useful to gain insight into the partner’s background to introduce how conflicts may arise within the couple if opposing values have been internalised. Having a child inevitably evokes memories of one’s own childhood, and this session encourages the group to think about different aspects of their childhood. Initially, there may be an emphasis on all the positive aspects, but if the group feels sufficiently secure other, perhaps more realistic, recollections may emerge. In a safe environment, the facilitator mother may be able to disclose more negative feelings towards the baby, and her own need for some separateness and autonomy. Likewise, the regulator may find herself experiencing unexpectedly strong feelings towards her new baby, which may complicate her intended return to work. New parents may reflect on their own parents’ parenting skills and try to understand their circumstances and actions. This may result in deeper bonds being forged, or may underline and consolidate existing disharmony.
