ABSTRACT

The facilitator needs to be mindful that this is the final session and attempt to make it fairly light-hearted and upbeat, and not open up new areas for exploration. Trust has been built over the weeks and the session can focus on what the women have learnt about themselves and how this can increase their self-esteem. A group photo can be a lasting memento of the experience. Working on self-esteem, and particularly encouraging the group to recognise individual strengths and achievements as a mother, is an empowering way to end the group. The level of self-esteem will, of course, vary between individuals, and self-esteem will be affected by both external events and inner resources. It must be emphasised again that these groups are aimed at ordinary women. At this time in their lives they are usually with a partner and happy to be a mother.
