ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the general practice functions within the National Health Service (NHS). Such information is particularly useful to nurses who are new to practice nursing or are working as attached employees of the district health authority (DHA). The roles of other members of a primary care team are also discussed. The main service provision from the hospital side of the NHS is at district health authority (DHA) level. The DHA is also the main point of contact between general practitioners and the hospital sector. The ideal practice team would also have a close liaison with dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthoptists, counsellors, speech therapists, marriage guidance, continence services and special aids. Unfortunately, many of these services are readily available only to practices in health authority premises, where the community staff are also based. However, other practices should not be discouraged from attempting to forge links.
