ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on feeling good about the readers them self and managing their work environment. It helps the readers to cope with difficult or demanding situations by facing up to, understanding, and describing their own feelings. Research into nurses’ effectiveness as communicators shows that, while informal contact with patients and their relatives is made in a warm and caring way, nurses have poor formal communication skills. The way in which we most commonly communicate with each other is by talking. The chapter provides some theories of communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There may be many occasions when the pressure of work makes the readers think that the whole population is feeling unhealthy and are bringing their problems to the surgery. The fact of the matter is that only a small proportion of the symptoms people feel are presented to health care workers at all.
