ABSTRACT

The clinical theme for this chapter is the avoidance of cardiovascular disease. Screening involves health education, since people are encouraged to appreciate how much more healthy they could be if they altered less healthy aspects of lifestyles. Although the project was based on a design developed for arterial disease prevention, the method could easily be adapted to organize other screening clinics for the young or elderly. The chapter describes the Oxford Project. The principal requirements for establishing health promotion and prevention are also discussed. The practical example used in this chapter is targeting prevention of coronary heart disease and it is used to illustrate the points that are made. The Oxford Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke Project team developed a three-way system of recalling patients for mildly raised hypertension to ensure no-one was missed.
