ABSTRACT
Introduction Just before I arrived at Grendon in September 2002,1 recall receiving congratu latory letters from two of my predecessors who between them had notched up 17 years of governing the prison. 'Welcome to the best governing job in the world/ wrote one. It felt as if I had been granted an exceptional privilege: the responsibility of safeguarding a unique tradition in a very special kind of prison.
