ABSTRACT

Supervision session 2: Friday 10th April ^ mental health and person-centred working explored ‘So, Fareeda’s son had to be hospitalised. I’m wondering about your reaction to that.’

Carla nodded and spoke her thoughts. ‘It sounded reasonable. Clearly, things had taken a turn for the worse. I felt for Fareeda, having to cope with what happened on her own, and I hope that things went well at the discharge meeting that she was going to attend. So how do I react? Well, I am aware of feeling very concerned whether being hospitalised and being given powerful medication can have an e¡ect that blocks the client’s internal psychological process. I also appreciate that for some people there is simply a need for them to be in a place of safety from where a plan of action can be formulated. Clearly, Ali was losing it. How much was cannabis induced, how much was his own thought processes running to extreme, I don’t know. But there’s no doubt that Ali does experience some degree of internal pain ^ I’m not sure what else to call it ^ psychological or emotional distress?’
