ABSTRACT
Introduction This chapter was written to introduce the reader to the differences between caring for patients with chronic illness and those suffering an acute illness. Aspects of spiritual care are addressed with the emphasis on the needs of people living with a disease that would be rapidly fatal without treatment. Nursing involvement, both personal and professional is discussed in relation to the discontinuation of treatment.
