ABSTRACT

However, not all countries adopted the shortened programs and when morbidity and mortality rates were compared amongst a number of countries it became apparent that those using the shortest treatment times had the highest rates of morbidity and mortality. This study suggested that there were probably a number of factors involved in providing ‘optimum’ dialysis and the search for ways by which this could be determined commenced. They are known by such terms as ‘dialysis prescription’ and ‘dialysis dose’. This chapter will address the factors that, at the time of writing, appear paramount in the provision of adequate dialysis.
