ABSTRACT

Introduction It is generally accepted that young patients are usually best treated with peritoneal dialysis rather than haemodialysis and that CCPD is preferable to CAPD. However, the use of peritoneal dialysis as a renal replacement therapy in children differs in a number of aspects from its use in adults. As with paediatric haemodialysis, the body surface area of the child as well as the peritoneal surface area, are key components to successful dialysis. Paediatric renal replacement therapy is a specialty of its own and this chapter introduces the reader to the principles involved and provides an overview of the treatment parameters.
