ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes five possibilities for prophetic dreams starting with Aristotle's work. First, have the possibility that prophetic dreams that come true are mere coincidences. Second, we have the sophisticated Aristotle's notion that waking thoughts continue into sleep and sleeping thoughts may carry over into wakefulness. A third cause for prophetic dreams is that there is overwhelming evidence that dreams cannot only solve problems, or inspire us to creativity, but also our dreams may serve as probability estimators. The fourth possibility for prophetic dreams is that they may be divinely inspired. The fifth, for prophetic dreams comes from Jung, although suspect its theoretical roots were established by Aristotle. It is fascinating to think either that Aristotle came perilously close to describing the same phenomenon when he described tokens in dreams or that he actually did describe the principle of synchronicity.
