ABSTRACT

Bullying is the intentional, unprovoked abuse of power by one child in order to inflict pain or cause distress to another child on repeated occasions. Bullying occurs in most schools and all age groups. Children who are the victims of bullying usually suffer in silence, so it is important always to consider the possibility. It is important to convey to the child that it is all right to talk about bullying and those relevant adults will try to help him keep safe. Given the well-proven link between bullying and young people’s emotional health and well-being, preventive approaches to reduce bullying and deal with it early before it becomes an established problem should be strongly supported. Referral to a paediatrician may be needed if there is doubt about the relevance of somatic symptoms. Emotional or behavioural symptoms may need referral to a primary mental health worker.
