ABSTRACT

It is likely that we all have misunderstandings about our bodies at a deeply unconscious level. Yet the majority of people overcome such blocks during the process of psychological development and find their way to using their bodies reasonably well to express their sexuality. Indeed, someone who can work with the body and mind together may be the best person to offer such help, as many other therapists are barred from direct access to the body. Standing by a couch where a patient is lying or sitting within the privacy of a surrounding curtain, it may be possible to give confidence that a finger, the doctor's or the patient's, could be allowed to slip in without causing damage. It is essential that the patient's disappointment is openly acknowledged, and that the doctor can recognize his or her own, so that both can find a renewed energy and hopefulness to tackle the difficult problem of exploring the fantasies.
