ABSTRACT

DNA profiling was first used in a double murder investigation in 1986 (Case 1.1). Since that date, there has been exponential growth in the use of the technique. A forensic scientist desires better tools to discriminate biological matter. A crime investigator desires the latest technology to determine ‘a person of interest’ or to eliminate potential suspects. The media including newspaper columns, film and television capitalizes on the fascination of the public with crime – who, what, when, where and how the crime was committed – to engage the reader and viewer.
