ABSTRACT

The therapist should prepare a checklist before progressing further with self-referrals. The checklist includes reviewing and understanding the guidance provided by therapist's professional body in relation to patient self-referral; the therapist's organisation supporting the concept of his/her service introducing patient self-referral; reviewing and understanding relevant policy documents that may have implications for the therapist's service; and reviewing and being aware of the key evidence sources regarding patient self-referral. The therapist should understand the legal and professional aspects as they apply to patient self-referral and his/her service and should have developed a specific communications strategy that ensures formal links are made within and between his/her service and other stakeholders, including key referral sources. The therapist's staff should also understand the legal and professional aspects as they apply to patient self-referral and the service.
