ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the options that are currently available for investigating the causes, the conventional management of pregnancy loss, and treatments that may be offered to prevent it from happening again. The introduction of Early Pregnancy Units (EPUs) in hospitals in recent years means that patients and professionals have a dedicated unit through which women can be sensitively diagnosed and supported when things appear to be going wrong. The most common complication seen in early pregnancy is miscarriage. The vast majority of miscarriages occur early, before 12 weeks’ gestation, and vaginal bleeding is the most common presenting symptom, often accompanied by cramping, central, low abdominal pain. Reproductive immunology is an area of research and treatment that, with the exception of screening for and treatment of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), attracts much debate and controversy. Glucocorticoids Given to suppress immune responses.
