ABSTRACT

Despite these considerable barriers, the growing emphasis on psychiatric (also termed psychosocial) rehabilitation (PSR), and more recently on recovery, has engendered new hope. PSR focuses on helping people with SMI develop skills and access appropriate resources and supports that can facilitate their ability to articu late and pursue their personal goals. Recovery-oriented services, which include PSR as well as other types o f service, aim at seeking, achieving and maintaining valued social roles and a personally meaningful life despite and beyond the limitations and challenges o f the SMI. Recovery differs from cure as it does not require remission o f symptoms or alleviation o f other impairments.
