ABSTRACT

The family therapist is tuned into change that is taking place at several different levels among those affected by the user's – Mark's – decision to confront his drug use. The family therapist takes into consideration the dynamic interaction within family relationships and formulates a working hypothesis to help make sense of the possible pitfalls that could undermine a carefully organised treatment plan. The family therapist brings a point of view that looks at the bigger picture, taking into consideration the various perspectives and potential conflicts held by other members of the family. The role of family therapy can facilitate a transition to a future where the family members and their dynamic interplay can make a choice to adjust differently to a new life style. Within the family therapy paradigm the therapist has many different approaches that might help Mark consider his changing relationships to both his drug use and his mother.
