ABSTRACT

Life-threatening events may actually force service users to contemplate decisions that will change patterns of behaviour. Managing risk and risk behaviour are key when working with service users, as the very nature of substance misuse may involve high-risk behaviours such as injecting illicit drugs and possibly sharing equipment. Staff also have to manage their own anxieties about the service user's management of drug and/or alcohol use. Working with service users who have emotional problems can be draining for staff, and supervision is essential to allow staff to reflect on their work with clients. There is a strong need for developing trust between the professional and the service user. Multi-professional liaison and communication are key responsibilities for Helen as the nominated care co-ordinator, and this requires liaison with a variety of health and social care professionals. Given Mark's history of overdosing, the professional network's concern for his well-being is understandable.
