ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the basic organisation of the openings to morning care interaction in Edogawa Care and how they work to get things started. It explores the main properties of how the participants at the end of an exchange manage to take leave of each other in a coordinated way. The characteristics of openings in institutional eldercare have been examined by Grainger in her study on communication in a Welsh geriatric hospital. The interactional problem of closing a conversation was first discussed by Schegloff and Sacks in their seminal paper 'Opening up closings'. 'Schegloff and Sacks' framework was further developed by Button, who focuses on one specific feature that frequently occurs towards the end of an interaction: moving out of closing. Button shows that moving out of closing may occur at different 'opportunity spaces' throughout the pre-closing and terminal exchange turns.
