ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines the data with respect to, reverse order of appearance, the interactional tempo, the back and forth of task talk and non-task talk, the organisation of openings and closings, and the occurrence of honorifics. It focuses on few personal observations regarding the importance of communication in institutional eldercare. In her seminal study on care communication in Wales, Grainger draws a direct connection between impoliteness and infantilisation. The book shows that the beautified form o-toire is almost exclusively used by female speakers. The analysis of terms of address has revealed that female residents tend to be called by their first name more often than their male peers. It offers different ways of communicating care tasks and care non-related matters, and describes the negotiation of tempo differences.
