ABSTRACT

Since the turn of the 21st century, a new wave of critical educational thought has taken root that has been termed revolutionary critical pedagogy. Although this wave has been framed as originating in a return to marxism, I hold that it is more appropriate to think of it as a turn to Marx. While the foundations of critical pedagogy mention marxism, they often rely almost exclusively on secondary marxist literature on consciousness and ideology and, as I have shown in the last chapter, on quite poor readings of this literature. By contrast, revolutionary critical pedagogy has centered marxism and Marx’s critique of political economy. Ideology, alienation, and other marxist categories are still highlighted, yet they are situated within the matrix of production.
