ABSTRACT

Upon completion of Chapter 11, readers will be able to explain the effect of listening on mental and physical health, the importance of reflective listening in counseling, and describe the effect of medical socialization on physician listening skills and behaviors. They will be able to describe factors that affect patient–provider interactions and listening (e.g., nature of the visit, health approach, gender, culture, age). Using material from this chapter, readers can enhance their interactions with health providers and potentially reduce medical errors.
