ABSTRACT

Upon completion of Chapter 2, readers will be able to identify and describe areas of listening competency, major types of listening (e.g., discriminative, comprehensive, critical, appreciative, therapeutic, supportive and empathic listening), and listening levels. They will also be able to describe the strengths and weaknesses of each listening type and level, their relationship to listening fidelity, as well as key factors that may affect each. Understanding these concepts will aid readers as they make strategic choices about the type and depth of listening they should utilize (e.g., personal listening goals, the listening situation, relationship with those involved and the needs of others).
