ABSTRACT

Upon completion of Chapter 4, readers will understand how physical and psychological differences effect listening processes and abilities. They will also be able to articulate how individual differences influence the translation, evaluation, and responding to messages. They will be able to name a number of individual differences (e.g., personality traits and types, listening style preferences, communication apprehension, receiver apprehension, and cognitive complexity) and discuss how each effects listening. Knowing these concepts will help readers adapt their listening skills to different individuals.
