ABSTRACT

Upon completion of Chapter 5, the reader will understand the effect of cognitive load on listening resources and processing, particularly as related to individual noise sensitivity and multitasking. Readers will be able to differentiate between multitasking and switch-tasking, identify key causes of switch-tasking, and describe multiple methods of reducing and managing switch-tasking behaviors. They will be able to explain the effect of a variety of technologies on our listening ability as well as how mediated communication is changing what it means to listen. With this knowledge, readers can make strategic technological choices when communicating with others.
