ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the approach taken in this book. It starts by outlining my own position in relation to the production of knowledge. Pharmaceutical companies are involved in processes of knowledge production, and so are social scientists. I outline the particular influences on the interpretation taken. The concept of pharmaceuticalised governance, which is where the routines of pharmaceutical consumption are embedded in relations of power and domination, requiring the presentation of a particular self and specific forms of conduct, is introduced. This concept links up recent social science interest in the process of pharmaceuticalisation with the Foucauldian concept of governmentality. Other concepts that are referenced in other parts of the book or provide an insight into the orientation of the book are covered, including the standardisation of health practices, the sick role and thought collectives. The chapter then provides a brief overview of what will be covered in the rest of the book.
