ABSTRACT

14A lot of the materials needed for alternative processes are similar to those of a regular black -and-white darkroom. However, in this day and age, many people have either never stepped foot in a darkroom, or it has been years since they last saw the inside of one. Even if you do use your darkroom a lot, not everything is the same in the world of historic process. This chapter provides an overview of the materials that will be required, as well as the techniques that should be mastered in becoming an alternative process printer.

Remember, having a silver gelatin darkroom is one thing, but having a “dim room” for alternative processes is quite another. Enfield spells out everything that is needed, and makes sure to break it down by process. Alternative processes are heavy on the materials and chemicals, but not everything is needed if you are not doing all of the processes in this book. A full list (in alphabetical order) is provided in this chapter and then the breakdown for each process is repeated in each chapter. A reason for each material is given so that you know what to do with the item once purchased.
