ABSTRACT

As a Key Person, it is vital that we expand our knowledge and thoughts on attachment theory, the requirement for a secure base for children and the ability of children to become attached to more than one significant person. This chapter includes the historic development/evolution of the Key Person Approach from Bowlby's research through to its implementation when it became mandatory in 2008. The Key Person Approach results initially in the emotional needs of each baby or young child being met by their Key Person combined with their care and educational needs. The expectations of the Key Person Approach are that the Key Person will form a close attachment bond with each of their key children and with the parents and family. Finally, the chapter explores the impact of being a Key Person on each member of staff, both the advantages and difficulties as well as the support that may be required for each Key Person.
