ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses how to use dichotomies as independent variables in regression and shows that how to use reference groups in regression. It suggests how researchers used reference groups and then dichotomies to study gender differences in housework and also shows that how researchers used dichotomies and then reference groups to study the effect of judges' daughters on judges' decisions. The chapter covers simple techniques we can use when we want to include these kinds of variables in a regression equation as independent variables. The 2014 General Social Survey included a lot of questions about science. The researchers asked respondents a series of true/false quiz-like questions designed to determine their scientific knowledge. The chapter discusses dichotomous variables and about how to interpret their effects. The reference-group technique calls for us to look at sets of dummy variables, but they are each dummies nonetheless.
