ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses primarily on the ITTM’s first stage, or Phase A, in relation to the other two stages, and within the “larger picture” of trauma impact treatment that is its structure. It explains the ITTM treatment methods employed with caregivers and children, individually and together. Usually both caregivers (or foster parents, grandparents, etc.) will refer the child and usually both attend Phase A, which consists of a series of educational sessions that detail the main elements of complex trauma in childhood and its emotional, psychological, and physiological repercussions throughout the lifespan. Phase A also explains the ITTM principles and methods. The caregivers must successfully complete the Treatment Information Sessions (TIS) in order to proceed to Phase B, where one of them will be brought into direct partnership with the clinician. The caregivers’ participation in the TIS permits the clinician to assess which is likely the most motivated/involved/available to continue through Phases B and C. In Phase A, ITTM clinicians deliver six 90-minute, accessible, Trauma Information Sessions (TIS) in a course setting. The recommended size is 15-30 caregivers per group. The six sessions are psycho-educational in nature and provide continuously updated information about the effects of trauma on children, adults, and families. Advanced CBT diagrams are the primary clinical skills method.
