ABSTRACT

The education of Latinos is inextricably linked to the broader issue of immigration. Many educators, administrators, and staff who work on a day-to-day basis with Latino students in school systems are inevitably influenced by these prejudiced ideologies transmitted by the media and the printed press. The case of the Mexican American Studies (MAS) program in Tucson, Arizona, illustrates the power of the media to relay news events under the lens of specific ideologies. The origins of the MAS program can be traced to the Chicano Movement in the 1960s as well as grassroots efforts in the 1990s to provide students with experiences based on the history, literature, and art of the Latino community. Despite high support from students, teachers, and the community, the MAS program became the target of conservative forces in Arizona.
