ABSTRACT

Lady Dilke, the wife of Sir Charles Dilke, M.P., died suddenly, on October 24, at Pyrford Rough, Woking.

Emilia Francis Strong was born at Ilfracombe, in Se;Ptember, 1840. Her father, who was of American ongin, was originally an officer in_ the East India Company's Service, but be retired early, and settled in Oxfordshire. In 1862 she was married to the late Mark Pattison, Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, and for many years after her marriage she shone in Oxford society as one of the most brilliant and fascinating personalities of the time and place. She became a contributor to the Saturday Review shortly after her marriage, was the principal fine art critic of the Academy

Obituary for many years, and a frequent contributor to many other reviews and periodicals. She contributed a biography of Lord Leighton to the series of " Modern Artists " issued by the French publisher, Dumas, and she wrote in French a monograph on " Claud Lorrain d'apres des documents inedits."
