ABSTRACT

Another type, that of the so-called "Department Clubs," is chiefiy represented by a woman's club at Chicago, taking its name from being divided into six departments, in one of which every member is bound to give her services. These departments are: Reform, Home, Education, Philanthropy, Art and Literature, Philosophy and Science. Several of these are naturally chiefiy devoted to literary work, but philanthropie work· grows out of every department in its workings. The Civie Club of Philadelphia does praetical work for the good of the community, and is indeed the Oetavia Hill Association of the city. The working girls' clubs are, generally speaking, the result of independent efforts; some attempts, not generally very successful, bave been made to .affiliate them to Borne of the more important ones.
