ABSTRACT

These glances within "and without are prefaced by a short note 'from the philosophic writer, Moritz Carriere, in which he expresses the hope that they may bring refreshment and joy to thoughtful souls in quiet hours. But as this writer was reading the glances, the thought that rose uppermost was how many souls thirsting for quiet hours that never come in these days of hurry and rush, when so often he who reads must run, might here' find tranquil thoughts to go with them, in the whirl of the street, or the rnsh of the railway ,train. Those for whom steady reading is beyond reach may yet attain to carry away a thought packed neatly in a few words, as a seed to expand in their hearts, even in the midst of modern unrest.
