ABSTRACT

The text of the clauses which affect women, will be found at page 167 of this Review; it will be seen that the restrictions imposed on them in regard to home work and overtime have been passed exactly in the form in which they were first proposed, although much effort was made to have them omitted or modified in committee. But in regard to laundries, Section 19 has been entirely recast, thanks to the strenuous advocacy of the Right Hon. Henry Matthews. The Clause as it now stands applies the safeguards of the Factory Acts to laundries in matters of sanitation, ventilation, and safeguarding of machinery, but the hours of work, though limited, are not regulateq. with

the rigidity originally proposed. Institutions of a b01U1 fide religious and philanthropic character will not be interfered with, nor small laundril'ls in which not more than two persons are employed from outside.
