ABSTRACT

It was in 1893 that Miss Kingsley started on her first journey of exploration in the mail steamer Lagos, Captain Murray commanding, for S. Paul de Loando. She made a valuable collection of marine fish, and was so successful that she resolved to make a second expedition, on which she started in December, 1894, sailing again with Captain Murray, but in the steamer Batanga. In both her expeditions she received the greatest kindness and help from officials, traders, and missionaries of all nationalities, French, German, and

Portuguese. The object of the second was to coll~ct specimens of fresh-water fish, and to study the fetIsh customs of the natives. The collections she has made, which are said to be very valuable, have been sent to Dr. Gunther, of the Natural History Museum, South Kensington.
