ABSTRACT

For many years Maria Deraismes was looked upon as the sole and undisputed head of the Woman’s movement in France. In 1879 she succeeded Mons. Léon Richer as President of “La Société pour l’Amélioration du Sort de la Femme,” which in 1881 amalgamated with “La Société pour la Revendication des Droits de la Femme.” She directed the societies combined until the day of her death, and until quite 91recently no other properly organised group for the defence of women’s interests existed here.
