ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the various uses of biometric technology in public safety. Biometrics are very useful to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies because the technology can be used to help identify a subject under suspicion, involved in a crime or being booked into a jail facility. Developments in biometric technology have expanded from just fingerprints. They now include facial recognition, palm prints, iris, hand/finger geometry, voice, dynamic signature and DNA matching. The aforementioned biometric technologies are discussed in this chapter. This chapter also discusses recent uses of biometric technology in public safety and in the private sector.
