ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we examine how use-of-force technology has changed law enforcement’s approach to dealing with suspects in a patrol or custodial setting. Less-lethal weapons like Tasers, pepper spray or beanbag rounds can be found in most law enforcement agencies. This technology has greatly improved an officer’s ability to deal with a combative subject
without resorting to a higher level of force. As a result, the amount of injuries to officers and suspects has decreased when less-lethal force is utilized. There is some controversy from various community groups who feel that less-lethal technology can be abused, but in the end, less-lethal technology does its job when used properly. This chapter offers specific recommendations to public safety managers that deal with use-of-force issues in their own jurisdictions. We also explore department policy and effective training programs for lesslethal technology.
