ABSTRACT
In this chapter, students explore the future of technology and how it relates to the public safety field. “The evolution of technology directly affects the way the criminal justice system operates at fundamental levels. The adoption and implementation of public safety technology also directly shapes the police and practices of the justice system.”1 So what is the future of technology? One only has to watch television or surf the Internet to see some of the innovative technology being discussed around the world. For example, will there be a time when police officers use cloaking technology to conduct surveillance on drug dealers? Could the courtroom of the future use augmented-reality technology? These are just a few of the possibilities being considered by public safety agencies around the country.
This chapter is designed to give you a glimpse of the innovative technologies being used or evaluated by public safety agencies across the country.
