ABSTRACT

The subject of this work is, as the author tells us, the history of the development of the factory system, and of the novel legislation in respect to it. He tells the story well, and as it is one of much interest the book is well worth reading, and contains information which to most readers will be new as well as curious. 272Being an inspector of factories, Mr. W. C. Taylor has had good opportunities of studying their effect on the people employed in them, and it is to be regretted that he did not confine his observations within the limits which he had at the commencement marked out for himself. As it is, however, he branches out into digressions on agriculture, on which subject he has no special means of obtaining information, and is led by the authors he quotes into making mistakes.
