ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses the planning of the school programme for science at the class level. Arguments based on the need for children – particularly young children – to have a steady relationship with someone who knows them well has favoured retention of the generalist class teacher and the preservation of the long tradition of generalist teaching in primary school education across the world. The science subject leader contributes to the strategic development of the subject in the school, securing and sustaining effective teaching, leading and managing staff and ensuring the most effective deployment of human and physical resources. The science policy directs and guides staff, linking closely with the overall school policy and articulating within it a vision for science education. The Croydon School Science Project website provides teaching resources relating to these activities that can be used by other schools. The chapter discusses the development of a school science policy and the management of resources, including time and people.
