This chapter outlines some of the key issues to be considered in planning science lessons. It concerns the aspects of planning that give the sparkle to lessons through creative teaching needed to encourage children's creativity. Teachers need to have the big ideas in view even though the goals communicated directly and indirectly to the children will be concerned with understanding the small ideas specific to the lesson content. There are multitudes of suggestions for children's activities and experiences available to teachers from a range of sources. The availability of necessary materials for children to use in practical inquiries and other equipment they may need are things to think about well in advance of a lesson. The degree of detail in teachers' lesson plans varies depending on a teacher's experience and confidence of being able to make on-the-spot decisions. The various phases of the lesson provide different opportunities for assessment.
