ABSTRACT
The Shanghai dialect, a member of the Wu dialect family, is spoken by approximately 24 million people residing mainly in the city of Shanghai and its vicinities. The city is situated at the southern part of the Yangtze River delta in eastern China. The phonological description of the Shanghai dialect presented here is typical of the educated metropolitan Shanghai speakers in their late fi fties.
