ABSTRACT

Digital technologies and especially the Internet as a new means of distribution challenge the once 'most critical monopoly held by the music industry'. Today, artists rely on new distributional means to disseminate their music independently. Musicians and labels make use of different outlets, online as well as offline. They utilize social media and online retail platforms and netlabels have emerged as new distributors. For many artists, gigs play a central role for the sale of CDs and some employ personal modes of delivery. Music is distributed in physical as well as non-physical formats. Various online platforms are used in Metro Manila's independent scene. Posting a song on SoundCloud can serve promotional purposes, although it is at first glance an act of distribution. In Metro Manila's independent scene new distribution platforms, such as Bandcamp, SoundCloud, iTunes or online labels have gained importance.
