ABSTRACT
The early "voyageurs" of America and the more modern explorers of Africa have always recorded as an instance of barbarism that the men of a family took their meals first, the women waiting submissively till their lords and masters had eaten their fill before they dared sit 461down to the remnants, if any were left. We had flattered ourselves that as a nation we had outlived this custom of savagery. Indeed, there are optimists who try to make us believe that " Place aux dames," is the new order of the day, but the attitude now taken by the political Associations, who for some years past have been insisting upon the right of every householder to have a vote in order to secure justice tor him or her differs in no material respect from that of the lordly Sioux or Cherokee.
