ABSTRACT

THE LUCKNOW PACT T he outcome of the Lucknow Congress, in con­ structive politics, was the Lucknow Pact. The main proposals embodied in the Pact with regard to the Hindu-Muslim controversy, which were accepted by the Congress and the Muslim League and by the Government of India itself, ran as follows:—

“ Adequate provisions should be made for the representation of important minorities by election and the Muhammadans should be represented through special electorates on the Provincial Legis­ lative Councils in the following proportions:

“ Provided that no Muhammadan shall participate in any of the other elections to the Imperial or Pro­ vincial Legislative Councils, save and except those by electorates representing special interests.
