ABSTRACT

Aviation is a global industry and integral component of the world economy, connecting people and places and facilitating trade. Sustainability in aviation is a difficult challenge with CO2 emissions contributing to climate change. Meanwhile, as global aviation expands, there is widespread indifference to imposing restrictions on what is seen as a successful industry. There are opportunities for further growth, particularly in the large emerging economies of the Far East and India, where aviation has an important role (Bowen 2000; Hooper 2005; Evans 2014). The evident economic contribution of aviation as an enabler of international trade and tourism tends to overpower discussion of the environmental impact.
