ABSTRACT
We are all, at the core of our genetic selves, African. Anatomically modern humans have lived in Africa for at least 200,000 years, leaving tantalizing but scant clues in the form of bone fragments, footprints, stone tools, and evidence of tool use. Linguistics provides other clues, because languages followed some of our ancestors as they left Africa, in trickles and surges, to settle the rest of the world. At the same time, human evolution continued in Africa.
